Berkeley: Ladies Who Lunch On Zachary’s

It was a kick ass beautiful day 2 week ago when my sister and I jumped in her Accord for a much needed Zachary’s run. We grew up on this stuff, my mother used to work one block away from the College Ave location, and we always felt we must have been really good that day if we got a slice of their amazing pepperoni pizza. Til this day, when we have a craving for something hot, cheesy and salty, Zachary’s is always our go to. We picked up our mom from her nail shop (yea, yea, we totally fit the Asian stereotype don’t we? My mom does nails, I’m a foodie and my sister drives a Honda. It’s alright. we’re still adorable!) in Berkeley and stopped in at the Solano location for lunch.

Caesar Salad: Romaine Lettuce tossed with Zachary’s Caesar dressing, Croutons, and Aged Parmesan (6.95)

I so heart their caesar salad! Their dressing is super garlicy, literally a punch in the face of must brush your teeth immediately before speaking to (or kissing) anyone after eating this lethal salad. I LIKEY! Never over-dressed, lettuce always crisp and fresh, always served with a ton of parmesan and the best buttery croutons and bread sticks ever. I rarely have a die-hard passion for leafy goods as I do this salad, We got one to share between the 3 of us because we knew we needed to save room for the pizza to come. My sister was so hungry, she dug in and served herself once the plate hit the table as I was fumbling in my purse for my camera.

ME: Waiiiit, stop, I need my camera, I have to take a pictures
SISTER: But I’m hungrrrryyyy!!! *serves herself some and starts eating right away*
ME: Deng it, what you can’t wait 2 seconds?
SISTER: *mouth full of salad* Apparently not!

Large Thin Crust, 1/2 Pepperoni and 1/2 Summer Vegetable (zucchini, yellow summer squash & asparagus) (18.25)
(once again digging in before I could snap a pic)

There are rare moments when everything just seems right with the world. I’m sitting in a quiet Zachary’s (a little after the lunch rush) with two of my favorite women in the world munching on some of the best pizza in the Bay, my mouth full of amazing buttery thin crust, spicy tangy tomato sauce that has this wonderfully lumpy texture that reminds me they use REAL tomatoes. Letting that bad boy simmer for a while before they layer on the goodness and top it off with salty yummy fat slices of pepperoni and whole milk mozzarella. The summer Veggie pizza was really good also, less salty than the pepperoni, crisp fresh veggies, the whole thing blanketed with lots of cheesy goodness, how can you go wrong? My sister and I nearly killed all the pepperoni side by ourselves. Something about that amazingly salty bite that has kept us addicted nearly 20 years later. SIGHS, I just feel all warm and happy thinking about it.

It still amazes me how food can evoke so much memories. Suddenly I’m craving all the best treats from my childhood. I think it’s time to do some..”time-traveling” at the grocery store this week!

Oh! A quick video post, not because it has anything to do with Zachary’s or even lunch, but because it’s a damn good song and I’ve had it on repeat the entire time I’ve been blogging. “Like a shotgun..needs an outcome..I’m your prostitute, you goin’ get some” DIG!
